Aunt/Uncle

Aunt/Uncle (avuncular) DNA testing may be used if the alleged father is unavailable for testing. The alleged father’s brother or sister may be tested with the child to determine if there is a biological relationship.

LEGAL TESTS

When should I use a legal aunt/uncle test?

When an alleged father is unavailable, missing or deceased, paternity testing may still be performed using full siblings of the alleged father to verify if a relationship exists between the alleged aunt(s)/uncle(s) and their potential niece or nephew.

What type of sample is collected in a legal test?

The most common sample type is a buccal swab. This sample is collected using a cotton swab that is gently rubbed on the inside of your cheek. Blood samples are also acceptable.
